Position Title: Engineering Manager
Reports To: General Manager
Department: Poway - Project and Manufacturing Engineering
Position Summary:
Plan, direct, and coordinate project and manufacturing engineering, technical estimating, tool and fixture design, and process engineering. Direct and maintain regular interaction with large OEM customers to facilitate the flow of information and hardware to support the customer's design and development work. Utilize an understanding of the company's process capabilities to provide technical input and direction on DFM (Design For Manufacturability). Work closely with our other key managers in operations, quality, production control, and customer service.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Lead the engineering team that translates customer requirements from the initial quote stage through qualification and implementation of robust production processes. Act as a facilitator of engineering staff, leveraging in-house "process experts" to champion design for manufacturability, robust process development and control, process improvement initiatives, and cost reduction activities.
2. Lead, teach, and direct the activities of the Manufacturing Project Engineers responsible scheduling and coordinating all elements of the manufacturing and inspection plans. Assist in the planning for development, documentation, implementation, control, and improvement of production processes.
3. Lead and direct the activities of the Tool/Fixture/Equipment Design Engineers. Actively participate in conceptual designs.
4. Lead and direct the activities of the Estimator(s). Actively participate in and review complex or strategic RFQs. Evaluate quotes in terms of delivery dates/commitments, materials, tooling, and fixtures/equipment necessary to support specific production.
5. Serve as primary interface and process expert with customer design and product engineers to facilitate a producible design, fabrication, and scheduling of build-to-print products with a focus on DFM and process improvement.
6. Recommend, justify, and drive the acquisition of new equipment or facility modifications to meet the process and production needs of the business.
7. Select and ensure proper qualification of suppliers.
8. Working closely with Operations and Quality management, direct appropriate application of six sigma tools to ensure high quality, cost effective, and robust process implementation.
9. Make effective use of available performance data to assess and prioritize opportunities for improvement.
10. Develop and utilize performance metrics for all areas of direct responsibility to maintain alignment of team performance and company goals.
11. Lead technical troubleshooting of production processes and equipment.
Position Requirements
Education: BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field of engineering.
Experience: Ten (10) or more years of progressive and relevant engineering experience in manufacturing, preferably in the manufacturing/machining of high-end precision metal components. Track record must demonstrate success in leading a team of engineers, preferably in precision machining or metals fabrication. Experience analyzing process capability, and developing and implementing process development and process improvement plans.
Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of precision machining and EDM. In-depth knowledge of the design of tools and fixtures for component fabrication and assembly. Working knowledge of manufacturing techniques and process development. Knowledge of Statistical Process Control and other Six Sigma tools.
Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to present ideas and information to people at all levels of the organization. Effective leadership and people management skills. Ability to lead, manage, train and coach others and facilitate the transfer of knowledge. Willingness to provide and accept constructive feedback to further continuous improvement and development of people. Effective organization, project management, and task management skills that include the ability to plan, prioritize, organize, gather facts, and exercise sound judgment in problem solving and decision making. Strong work ethic, task and detail orientation. Very efficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Working knowledge of 3-D CAD tools.
Abilities: Ability to work effectively with customer design engineers and provide design for manufacturability input. Ability to function as a key contributor and facilitator in a dynamic job shop environment to assess, capture and translate customer requirements into tools, fixtures and processes to meet customer requirements. Ability to collaborate and champion change, implement process improvement initiatives, and build a strong cohesive team. Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships and interfaces with employees at all levels of the organization, customers, and suppliers.
Ability to work under general direction and adapt to changing priorities and deadlines. Ability to travel throughout the plant to perform job duties. Able and willing to travel on a regular basis to local customer's facilities.
